Proverbs 13:12 reminds us that “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.” Depression is a deep sense of hopelessness when life feels out of control and more than we can bear, when positive change appears to be nowhere in sight, when waiting on God seems to be unrewarded, when all sense of purpose and motivation is lost, and when a prevailing sense of failure, inadequacy, and aloneness punctuate a sense of worthlessness.

Depression can also be the result of physical and emotional burnout, or a side effect from certain medications. Often, low grade depression can persist for weeks, months, and years. Left unresolved, low grade depression can become severe, paralyzing one’s ability to function and increasing a propensity to suicidal thoughts.

This course explores the biblical case studies of Naomi, Saul, David, Asaph, Elijah, Ahab, and Jonah who all struggled with various levels and intensities of depression (and in some cases, suicidal thoughts). Understanding the panorama of physical, emotional, and spiritual causes and solutions for depression from these illustrations gives great, practical direction and hope in helping others to freedom.

This course also explores suicidal thoughts stemming from survivor’s guilt, past abuse trauma, and plaguing guilt, and paralyzing doubts of salvation, and offers direction on how to resolve these deeper issues. Suicide is an ultimate act of pride against a holy and loving God. Suicide is never a solution, but a prideful escape from a truly humble response to pain.

This Spiritual Life Conference also seeks to provide a biblical case for whether a true Christian can commit suicide, or whether the act of suicide causes a person to lose their salvation.

Beyond exploring the signs and causes of depression, this course is designed to inspire hope in the God of All Hope. No one cares like Jesus!
